Pidgin Internet Messaging Client

Date May 15, 2008

Pidgin is a cool new open source Internet Messaging Client which is available free of cost. Pidgin is available in different versions for Mac, Windows and linux operating systems. As per wikipedia, the number of Pidgin users were estimated to be over 3 million in early 2007. The unique and most attrative feature of Pidgin Internet Messaging Client is that it lets users connect to multiple IM accounts simultaneously in a single application. These accounts can be of services including but not limited to AIM, MSN, Skype, Yahoo, My space IM and Jabber. There are similar internet messaging clients specifically for MAC OS. These include These include Adium and Proteus which are not as popular when compared to Pidgin.

I’ve been using Pidgin for about six months now and have found it extremely useful since I do not have to open different IM clients like yahoo, MSN, AIM, Skype and so on. With Pidgin I can connect with all my friends across IM clients by just using a single IM client. This not only saves lot of CPU resources but is also very convinient from the operational perspective. To support the skype IM protocal and a few other IM protocols, respective third party plugin needs to be downloaded. This is one area where Pidgin needs to improve. If all these third party plugins are pre-instralled with the software, it will make the usage of Pidgin even more easier for users.
