CMU Sphinx – Voice Recognition Software

Date June 9, 2008

CMU Sphinx is a voice recognition software developed at Carnegie Mellon University. CMU Sphinx commonly just known by the word Sphinx, uses complex technology to convert speech into text. CMU Sphinx which has been released under the open source BSD license is the only voice recognition software available in the market today which uses the continuous speech, speaker independent voice recognition system.

Sphinx 4 is the latest version of CMU Sphinx. There has been a sea change (for the better) when we compare Sphinx 4 with the earliest version of Sphinx. The development of Sphinx 4 has been supported by Sun Microsystems, which was founded by a Stanford University student. In order to review CMU Sphinx, I downloaded the latest version of the software yesterdya and tried it out. Though it works well, it still commits a few errors here and there. I found that, as of now, I’m better off typing (since I type at 100 wpm) instead of using a voice recognition software only to later come back to make the corrections, which I find is a very time consuing process. Hopefully, the future versions of Sphinx, with development support from Sun Microsystems, should be error free.
